Lockdown Lunches

(revised 18/04/2020)
'Stay at home!' is the official government advice and we're now several weeks into doing just that.

We started our own lockdown a week before the official announcement because Al is a key worker and we decided that it was best if he were the only person leaving the house.  He has a very strict routine to keep him, his clients and us as safe as possible while he's out and when he arrives back so, fingers crossed, we will stay safe!

I have been shopping twice in the last few weeks but, mainly, that task falls to Alyn along with popping things round to elderley relatives and picking up prescriptions etc.

I have some work coming up which will take me out of the house but, hopefully, safely and with all social distancing adhered to. I'll be out less than an hour.

We weren't one of those families who went into panic-mode, stocking up on tins and pasta and … loo roll?  But shopping did become a bit of a challenge because of those who did start stockpiling - leaving the rest of us to find what was left on the shelves and see what kind of meals we could create.  Luckily I had recently had a delivery of my 'Who Gives a Crap' toilet paper so no improvisation needed there!

I love food and cooking - just ordinary cooking - nothing flash.  If you like messing about in the kitchen using pretty bog-standard supplies and you like pictures of food, then you're in the right place.  If you're the sort of person whose conversation starter is 'what did you have for lunch?' then this is the blog for you.

In the past I've struggled with my relationship with food. It's so easy to become wrapped up in the 'good food / bad food' rhetoric and the notions of what I should or shouldn't be eating.  There's often  a huge amount of guilt wrapped up in enjoying food; not to mention all the focus on diet and weight-loss.  Food and eating was problematic and I wouldn't have biscuits, chocolate, cakes, crisps, butter, white bread, full fat yogurts … etc. in the house because just looking at those foods makes you fat, doesn't it?  And being fat is one of the worst things you can be … apparently.

Years later, I'm proud to say I have all those things in my kitchen and more.  I've been on quite a journey in recent years and I may write more about that later but, for now, I'm just happy to have discovered the absolute joy of all kinds of food.

I used to have a kitchen mantra which went something like 'if it takes longer to prepare and cook than it does to eat, then I'm not doing it!' Now, however, having discovered the wonderfulness of preparing meals with love, the kitchen is my happy place. I like nothing better than a morning spent batch cooking.

I rarely follow recipes but I often get ideas from them so I will reference those which I can but please bear in mind that I substitute ingredients right, left and centre depending on what I've got in and what we like / dislike.

I hope you enjoy what I share but, if you don't, I'll not lose sleep.  It's all about the love, here!
